International Women's Day 2006

ETC Celebrated International Women's on March 8 with the participation of over 400 women's group members.
ETC celebrated the 96th International Women's Day on March 8th with at Kitini Higher Secondary School in Godawari, Lalitpur. More than 400 women's groups members participated in the event!

ETC staff and women's group members gave speeches highlighting the importance of International Women's Day followed by a variety of competitions including games, dancing, and singing. The winners of these events were awarded prizes.

Nirmala Pahari from Mayur Women's Group of Badikhel VDC was one of the participants in the program. "Women are behind men in every aspect of life" she said. "Not only this, because of the long running unequal treatment of men and women, people have tended to ignore the contributions of women. But we are contributing a lot and we need to let people know about our accomplishments."

Manju Rana, ETC's Women Development Program officer described the history of International Women's Day and gave a moving speech on the hopes she has for women in Nepal: "Change begins with ourselves. We need not wait for others to initiate it for us. We need to change our paradigm, we need to start viewing women's roles, capacities, and contributions through a new lens of hope and faith."

The celebration of International Women's Day was a huge success. The festivities gave women a chance to recognize their role in society and to encourage one another in the work they are doing.
